Virtual Human Interaction Lab

Dr. Jeremy Bailenson of VHIL at Stanford just finished presenting at Metaverse U. You may have seen the recent NY Times article about mimicry and persuasion that covered some of their work.

Transformed Social Interaction (TSI), augmented gaze, and social influence were particularly interesting topics to me because of our current work in collaborative virtual environments. Much of their research focuses on breaking with traditional real life physical interaction to maximize the flexibility a virtual environment. I’m anxious to read their recent publication

Jeremy described a major Second Life study they have in progress that will be ending in a month or so. Approximately 100 students are participating and the amount of information they are collecting is quickly “filling a hard drive”.

I think gaze awareness in the real world basically allow others to infer interest in most cases. So transforming gaze for eg. as suggested in Baienson’s paper to give an interactant the impression that S/he is the center of interest is likely to break down/add noise to the already limited gestural communication bandwidth.
